Days:  Wednesday – Sunday and/or Thursday – Sunday. 
Hours: 10:45 a.m. - 7: 15 p.m. with some evening/event hours.  

Primary Work Location:  La Jolla
Salary Range:  $17.90 -$18.80 per hour

JOB SUMMARY:  MCASD invites all audiences to experience our world, our region, and ourselves through the prism of contemporary art. The Visitor Experience Ambassador utilizes established systems and protocols under the placemaking program to ensure optimization of the MCASD visitor experience. Support the mission and vision of the museum throughout the performance of job duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Alternate shifts between The Shop, front desk, floater, Axline entrance, Coast entrance, or any other VEA location as assigned.
  • Greet visitors and act as the first point of contact for the public, members, trustees, guests, school partners, vendors, etc.
  • Interact with guests and sell them admission tickets and pitch membership.
  • Maintain Museum’s incoming phone system by answering phone calls, transferring calls to appropriate parties, taking messages, and listening and responding to missed calls.
  • Ensure Museum policies are adhered to by being the first to share our guidelines and prepare our guests for their visit.
  • Greet and assist customers in The Shop; handle sales transactions; answer questions; maintain store appearance; assist with the receipt, merchandise, and maintenance of inventory; and perform other store duties assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with Visitor Experience Administrative Assistant (VEAA) to discuss team concerns, solutions, tools, needs, practices, policy, and cross-departmental systems.
  • In collaboration with VEAA and Manager, Retail & Visitor Experience (Manager), work closely with Security team to ensure guest safety and awareness in the space. Present feedback, guest issues, and other environmental concerns.
  • In collaboration with VEAA and Manager, work collaboratively with Advancement team to increase and maintain memberships, donations, and act as a representative for internal events.
  • In collaboration with VEAA and Manager, work collaboratively with Education team to assist in the processing of tours and support programs.
  • In partnership with VEAA and Manager, collaborate with Education and interpretation teams to develop team knowledge about MCASD programs and events.
  • Ensure deep understanding of VEA team systems, protocols, and culture, and ensure team standards and best practices are maintained in the execution of duties.
  • Support the Education & Earned Revenue teams by conducting gallery tours during rental events when gallery activations have been paid for.
  • Develop deep understanding for Museum spaces and earned revenue scripts.
  • Develop deep understanding for MCASD mission, vision, and values, and ensure standards are maintained.
  • Provide clerical and light administrative support to Advancement teams and/or other teams as assigned.
  • Work weekends, some evenings, and holidays as needed.
  • Follow policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:  Strong communication and problem-solving skills.  Outstanding professional decorum and the ability to interact confidently and welcoming with all visitors, guests, employees, trustees, students, etc.  Ability to work in an open, public-facing workspace while multi-tasking and with ongoing distractions, yet while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.  Ability to interact with tact, diplomacy, and empathy in any type of interaction.  Strong organizational skills with an emphasis in attention to detail and follow-up.  Ability to work independently or in a group environment.  Good technical skills in MS Office.  Bachelor’s degree and one year recent, relevant experience or any equivalent education and experience.  Bilingual skills preferred.  Knowledge of or interest in contemporary art preferred.
